When the world’s largest oilfield was discovered at Ghawar in Saudi Arabia in 1948, it added a major lever to America’s oil supremacy over the world economy.

Oil was becoming the essential energy resource, the basis of postwar global economic growth. The US Rockefeller oil majors would hold a tight grip on that power in the new postwar world of the American Century.
